Description

On November 24, a unique event took place as part of the Northern Lights FF. Together with the team of the film festival, Belarusian filmmakers who took part in the ‘Speed Dating’ meet-up and are interested in sound engineering visited the studio of the famous master Vladimir Golovnitski. He lives not far from Vilnius in a picturesque house overlooking a birch grove. There is also a studio where he mastered the sound for such films as ‘State Funeral’, ‘My Joy’ by Sergei Loznitsa, ‘In the Dusk’ by Sharunas Bartas, ‘The Land of Oz, ‘Living’ by Vasiliy Sigarev, ‘How I Ended This Summer’ by Alexei Popogrebski, and many others.

Vladimir shared with the guests the story of his professional formation, talked about his instruments and the library, which contains thousands of sounds that he recorded over the years, and also gave his visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in the creative process. To do this, Golovnitski included an excerpt from Sergei Loznitsa's new film ‘The Natural History of Destruction’—first without sound and then again with his own audio track. On the screen was archival footage of the bombing of Germany by the Allied forces, and the listeners could feel exactly what and how the master did to enhance the impression and to transition from deafening silence to dramatic polyphony.

During three hours of sincere conversation, the participants received a unique introduction to the profession of a sound designer and definitely felt why it is real art.
