A collection of stories from the body-positive Brits about the path to self-acceptance through violence and bullying
Rory is a bodybuilder who trained hard and developed an eating disorder due to constant binge eating. Mojo is a girl who grew up in a fat-phobic family and lived through the rape on which her mother turned a blind eye. Imogen is an activist who fought with excess weight but never defeated neither its cause nor prejudices in society and her closest circle. The stories of each of these heroes become a touching confession not only to themselves but also to the viewer. The documentary “The Body Fights Back” gathers opinions of a wide variety of people from athletes to influencers and tries to answer the question about why society still reacts negatively to overweight people and whether it is possible to defeat discrimination together. The film by Estonian journalist Marian Võsumets shot in Great Britain does not limit itself to just catchy activist slogans. “The Body Fights Back” is a truly in-depth study of food culture, from the rise of the fast-food industry and popularization of diets to the influence of insidious capitalism and childhood trauma. The latter becomes a tragic revelation of this film: behind almost every character the director finds a sad story of violence, rejection, and constant mockery.
