MOTHERS AND OTHERS

"But you're an expectant mother!" Documentary film about dreams, fears, and internal crises of women during pregnancy

What does a pregnant woman dream about? It is believed that, no matter how long her wishlist is, taking care of the unborn child and selflessly devoting to it as much time as possible should be considered a top priority. While anticipation the childbirth, women should attend parenting courses, adopt other people’s experiences and, of course, rejoice in the upcoming motherhood. And while they do this, topics not related to children are slowly slipping away from conversations with friends and family, as if nothing but strollers, pacifiers, and diapers doesn’t matter in life anymore. There is no way out of this. For some reason, a mother-to-be is expected to already forget about her career, politics, and her own complexes before giving birth, but the tragedy is that maternal love and existential crisis can easily take over at the same time. The documentary film "Mothers and Others" focuses on four Latvian women at different stages of pregnancy. The ambitious dancer Ruta has to interrupt her career. Housewife Viya, expecting a second child, dreads that postpartum depression will reoccur. Party girl Beata did not plan to get pregnant and change her life, but now she is going to get married and move to the village to raise a child there. Valeria, a young entrepreneur with a traumatic past, hopes to raise her first child in a happy family that she herself never had. All the heroines are of different ages and social statuses, but they are united by an aching feeling of yearning when being left alone with their fears and worries. "Mothers and Others" is a movie that succinctly reveals the complexity of feelings that cannot be blocked even by the strongest maternal instincts.
