VENUS. LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX

A colorful, picturesque, and cozy portrait of the Faroe Islands' most beloved artist

A vivacious elderly woman in a pink puffy jacket roams intently through the boundless mountainous terrain of the Faroe Islands. This is 72-year-old Sigrun Gunnarsdóttir, one of the country’s most famous artists, who was born and raised in the small village of Eiði, as if situated in the universe of Wes Anderson. Sigrun is always on the move, always at work; she paints, walks her dog, and plays ping-pong with her husband. Measured but full of pleasant little things life and picturesque surroundings are the main source of inspiration for her naive art: the artist's paintings, most often depicting people, birds, and mountains, speak their own visual language. The documentary, while delicately peeking into Gunnarsdóttir’s life, tells her story: from studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen to becoming an artist, a mother, and a grandmother, and receiving an order to paint a portrait of the Danish Queen Margrethe. The characters of Sigrun's whimsical paintings come to life on the screen thanks to Scottish art director Katie Beveridge, who works with Volkswagen, Burberry, and Marc Jacobs.
