Description

The director of the Northern Lights Volia Chajkouskaya will meet with one of the brightest representatives of the new Estonian cinema Veiko Õunpuu. The talk will be dedictaed to the new film "The Last Ones", the work on which took almost seven years. During their discussion they'll touch upon the basic elements of the director's films: dramatic characters, homages to movie classics as well as special grim humor.

Volia Chajkouskaya. Director of Northern Lights Festival in Belarus, producer, film director (Estonia/Belarus)

Volia Chajkouskaya was born in Belarus, currently living in Estonia. She started off with journalism studies and has 11 years of working experience in media. Volia also obtained a Masters Degree in directing and producing documentary films in Baltic Film and Media School (Tallinn, Estonia). She launched Volia Films production company in 2016, the company is registered in Estonia and Belarus. Volia Films produced a full-length documentary “The Road Movie” (dir. Dmitrii Kalashnikov) in 2016. The Road Movie was world premiered at IDFA First Appearance Competition the same year and was screened at more than 80 festivals. Volia is a voting member of European Film Academy and a member of Emerging Producers Network 2018. Moreover, Volia is a board member of the Producers and Film Production Guild of Belarus and is a founder and program director of Northern Lights Film Festival in Belarus. In 2019 Volia joined Allfilm production company as a producer and director. Currently has three projects in active stages.

Veiko Õunpuu. Film director, the author of "The Last Ones" (Estonia)

Veiko Õunpuu was born in Saaremaa, Estonia. Tallin university graduate and music and painting amateur, he worked on television and produced advertisement films. His debut feature film "Autumn Ball" (2007) received the Orizzonti programme award at 2007's Venice Film Festival. His next work "The Temptation of St Tony" was screened at 2010's Sundance Festival, and the following film "Free Range" was part of 2014's Berlinale. Veiko's latest work, the feature film "The Last Ones" (2020) was selected as Estonia's entry for Best International Film at the Academy Awards.
