Film, theatre and opera director Viesturs Kairish was born in 1971 in Riga, Latvia. He graduated from the Latvian Academy of Culture as a theatre and film director and upon graduation started working as a resident stage director at The New Riga Theatre. After having directed a couple of productions on the theatre stage, he was invited by the Latvian National Opera to stage Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Aside from his work on the theatre stage, Viestur Kairish has been working as a film director, directing feature films and documentaries.He received several Prizes and Awards for his work, among them the Spīdola Award for Unique Achievements in the Arts by the Latvian Culture Foundation.

Several of his productions toured international festivals, among them - the Wiener Festwochen (Hotel Europe), the Hebbel Theater Berlin (The Serpent), the Festival d’Avignon (Hotel Europe), and the Bonner Biennale (The Dark Deer, Hotel Europe).

Viestur Kairish has produced operas abroad: the season’s premiere at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Cologne Opera, etc. He has collaborated with the conductors Andris Nelsons, Markus Stenz, Cornelius Meister and Will Humburg.
