A documentary sensation from the past year—a sincere and captivating chronicle of a young woman artist's struggle for her place in the world of art. The film was shot over a period of 13 years
"For as long as I can remember, I've seen the world through my camera. But no motif has caught my eye as she did", Danish director Lea Glob begins the story of Apolonia Sokol, a young artist of Belarusian-Polish descent. Apolonia, who spent her childhood within the walls of a Parisian theater owned by her bohemian and eccentric parents, invites Lea into her turbulent life and allows her to observe everything that seems interesting. Over a span of 13 years, the introverted director and the free-spirited artist strengthen their friendship, during which Glob manages to capture thousands of hours of material. From this footage, she painstakingly assembles a poignant, emotional, and unfiltered portrait of a determined young woman who is trying to make ends meet, defending her creative individuality, and facing resistance and bias from art critics. The second key storyline of the film is Apolonia's friendship with Ukrainian radical feminist activist Oksana Shachko, another wandering soul in search of her creative self. "Apolonia, Apolonia" is the winner of the IDFA and CPH:DOX, two of the world's most prestigious documentary film festivals.
